Another Day in Siena

On one of our days in Tuscany, we visited the city of Siena. Dallin and I had already been to Siena, but we appreciated this city a lot more on our second visit. When we first went to Siena in March, we had high expectations for the city, and these expectations were not really met. We had heard people rave about how much they love Siena, but we kind of just saw it as another Italy town. However, when we visited Siena with my parents, we had a better experience. The weather was perfect, we saw a few more of the sights that we missed last time, and we just enjoyed the city a lot more.

We went to Il Campo, the famous, amphi-theater-like square-- arguably one of the most impressive squares in Italy. We also went to the Duomo, and this time we went inside, and also visited the other religious buildings and museums surrounding the Duomo. We of course got some pizza and gelato, browsed through the shops and streets of this beautiful city, and then called it a day.

Houses in Siena. The city is split up into 17 contrade, or neighborhoods. Each contrade has a mascot and unique colors. Contrade pride is demonstrated each year in Siena's Palio, or horse race. Each contrade hires a jockey and cheers them on in the horse race that takes place in Il Campo.

The highest point in the city is dominated by Siena's Duomo.
