After spending the first half of the day in Volterra, we spent the second half of our day in another hill town of Tuscany, San Gimignano.

San Gimignano is famous for its unique skyline. Fourteen medieval towers prickle the hill that San Gimignano is located on. But just imagine what the skyline looked like in the city's heyday when there were 72 towers! The city's towers served as fortification for the homes of nobles, because effective city walls had not yet been developed. But even as city walls were built, the towers continued to rise, now used by nobles to protect themselves from feuding families within the city. Think: the Montagues and the Capulets.

San Gimignano is known for being quite the tourist trap, but because we came near the end of the day, the crowds were clearing out as we arrived.

| We took a detour to a beautiful park in the town, behind the Duomo, which was surrounded by olive trees and musicians playing peaceful music. It was such a lovely atmosphere. The park also hosted this amazingly beautiful view of bella Toscana. |
